History

Sentio, Inc. is a not-for-profit global education network that was created in 2014 as a subsidiary of AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. (“AFS”) to develop a global network of member organizations to further promote the AFS mission and provide intercultural learning opportunities for adults.

AFS is a not-for-profit international education organization that, since 1947, has provided enriched intercultural learning experiences through global study abroad programs, volunteerism, structured learning methods and reflection. Quick numbers:

  • More than 12,500 participants a year go on AFS programs

  • Run by about 59 AFS organizations in over 100 countries

  • Supported by local staff with over 800 employees and over 48,000 active volunteers worldwide

  • More than 500,000 alumni have benefitted from a life changing experience with AFS

While the AFS network runs programs for youth, the Sentio network runs programs for adults.

The American Field Service began as a volunteer ambulance service during World Wars I and II. In 1946, AFS ambulance drivers transformed the international humanitarian aid organization into an exchange and education program with a noble vision: to help create a more just and peaceful world.
